VOLUNTEERS are being urged to wing their way to the aid of revellers in Hull as part of a new scheme to make the city a safer place to socialise.
Hull Street Angels Trinity have launched a recruitment drive to find volunteers willing to patrol the Lowgate and Trinity Quarter area of the Old Town.
Operating from Holy Trinity Church, they will walk the streets in twos and threes on Friday and Saturday nights and be on hand to offer practical help and support to anyone who becomes vulnerable during a night out.
Similar to the street angels already operating along Princes Avenue, they will be armed with two-way radios, first-aid kits, bottles of water and flip-flops for women feeling a bit footsore in high heels.
The angels will forge links with door staff as they attempt to ensure those in need get home safely. Volunteers will receive first-aid training and other support.
Karen Thompson, who has just been appointed as the scheme's co-ordinator, said: "I am really excited and thrilled to be part of this innovative project. Hull Street Angels are operating along Princes Avenue in Hull and have made a positive contribution to their community. It is envisaged that this new initiative will be equally as successful.
"I am looking for individuals who are passionate about supporting vulnerable people, Hull's night time economy and are also keen for the city of Hull be recognised as being a safe, welcoming and entertaining place for one and all."

Working in partnership with local traders and the Police and Ambulance Services, Street Angels will operate from Holy Trinity Church and provide practical help and support for those who become vulnerable in any way on weekend nights/mornings in Lowgate and the adjacent areas of Hull.
Based on the highly successful Hull Street Angels project based on Princes Avenue the volunteer ‘Street Angels’, wearing high-visibility jackets will patrol the streets in the Old Town’s Trinity Quarter on Friday and Saturday nights handing out bottles of water, creating links with the pubs/clubs door staff and ensuring individuals get home safely when all the bars and clubs in the area are closed.
The project is now recruiting a Coordinator to lead on the development and delivery of a programme of activity.
Adrian M. Horsley Chair Hull Street Angels Trinity said
“This is a very exciting project, good for Hull and good for the people of Hull . Ideally we are looking for someone who is dynamic, creative and self-managing with experience in coordinating projects and has the ability and experience of working as part of a team and working with volunteers”. To me this a marvellous opportunity”
